The Bilingual - Bicultural Education master's degree program with concentration in English as a Second Language (ESL) at Wayne State University was developed to enhance the basic skills of ESL teachers and prepare them for roles as school district ESL supervisors, district administrators, and resource room teachers.

Overview

The Bilingual - Bicultural Education program at Wayne State University is based on the development of specific competencies in the following areas.

  • Curriculum and Instruction

Which involves teaching strategies and methodologies relevant to the teaching of content curriculum areas in an ESL education setting, as well as the role of culture in the cognitive development of children;

  • Assessment

Which includes skills in identifying linguistic and cultural biases in existing assessment instruments and test item construction;

  • School-Community Relations

Which includes the identification of those elements in the community which will function in concert with the school to promote learning in children; and

  • Professional Socialization

Which establishes those skills necessary to develop leadership in ESL education.

Mission

We continually strive to improve our programs, to adapt to changing employment trends in education, counseling, etc., and to enhance the overall university experience for our students. We want to ensure that each of our students graduates with a sound and innovative education in a field that prepares them for the challenges and rewards that they will face in their chosen careers.

  • International applicants must complete the equivalent of a U.S. four-year degree, including all state and external/internal examinations required for the degree. Although a degree in another country may have a name similar to a U.S. degree, this does not necessarily indicate the degree can be accepted as equivalent.Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or its equivalent in upper division coursework.
