Overview
Objectives
- Solid basic training in English. The focus of the Applied Linguistics and Language Studies program of the Chung Yuan Christian University is on training our students in 5 basic aspects -- listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and translating. The student-teacher ratio in all our courses is reasonable, and lecture halls are equipped with Internet access, multimedia technology and advanced translation equipment to help our students gain a solid level of English proficiency.
- Systematic second foreign language education. We also provide courses in French, German, Japanese and Spanish to develop trilingual talents with a pluralistic, international perspective.
- Pragmatic applied linguistics curriculum. “TESOL” and “T & I” study tracks are available to students: they can choose to major in either track based on their interests, and become competitive foreign language professionals.
- Globalized education. More exchange programs for our students are being initiated each year. We also try to help the students develop an international perspective.
- Comprehensive teaching and learning software and hardware. ALLS has set up a Language Self-learning Computer Room, a Multimedia Materials Editing Room, a Translation and Interpretation Room, a Remedial Writing Room, an English Pronunciation Lab, a Second Foreign Language Study Consultation Room, an English Study Consultation Room and an English Speech Room so that students and teachers have available all the facilities they may need.
- Excellence in teaching and instruction. Our faculty comprises of 19 PhDs and 14 instructors. Among them 28 are Taiwanese, 2 American, 1 German, 1 Spanish, and 1 Japanese.
- Balanced focus on research and teaching. An M.A. program has been provided in ALLS for students who wish to pursue research in the field of applied linguistics and language studies. The coursework focus of our M.A. program combines key areas such as foreign language education, linguistic theories, information technology and comparative culture, proving that ALLS is indeed an inter-disciplinary academic unit.
- Teacher-student interaction. Students not only receive training in professional knowledge and skills in their class hours, but also are encouraged to spend time with our faculty members outside of class. They can use the time to discuss various issues, expand their viewpoints, mold their characters and develop their independent thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- High standards in foreign language certification. To help students improve their foreign language level, ALLS has set certain standards for foreign language testing and certificate requirements. These are also a driving force for students to constantly improve their foreign language proficiency.
