About

Florida State University’s Curriculum and Instruction degree with a specialization in Mathematics Education prepares scholars and practitioners to learn advanced skills and conduct research, thereby becoming leaders and faculty for tomorrow’s classrooms at all levels.

Overview

Florida State University offers two master’s degree tracks in Mathematics Education: one for individuals who already hold a Florida Professional Educator’s Certificate and one for those who are seeking certification.

Learning outcomes

The track for those who are already certified enhances mathematics teachers’ professional knowledge and skills through an emphasis on the analysis and application of current research in Mathematics Education. Faculty members provide opportunities for students to further pedagogical and subject matter knowledge and skills by focusing on research-based best practices.

The track for those seeking certification is designed to prepare individuals for a Florida Professional Educator’s Certificate covering Mathematics (grades 6-12). The curriculum offers opportunities to plan, deliver and manage high quality instruction under the guided supervision of both university faculty and school-based middle and high school mathematics teachers.

For advanced studies, the specialist and doctoral degrees offer more in-depth opportunities to further knowledge and practice in Mathematics Education. Focusing on the teaching and learning of mathematics, faculty and students in the program engage in scholarly research to inform the field. Through interactions in a community of scholars that span not only the department and college, but also the university, students in the doctoral program are apprenticed through coursework and related research and teaching experiences to work across conventional domains to address significant problems in the field.
