The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Kansas is the only department in Kansas offering a regular program in East Asian Languages and Cultures - Chinese or Japanese Language and Literature at University of Kansas.

Overview

University of Kansas students in the Master's Degree program in East Asian Languages and Cultures - Chinese or Japanese Language and Literature study under close supervision with nationally known scholars of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.  The graduate program trains students who will devote themselves to becoming effective links between East Asia and the United States.

Learning outcomes

Students concentrate in Chinese, Japanese, or East Asian Cultures, usually entering the program with at least two years of college-level language. The program typically takes two years to complete, including the defense of a required Master's thesis.

General requirements

In addition to KU's admission requirements » for graduate study, the department has the following prerequisites:

  • At least two years of an East Asian language*, and
  • Two lecture courses dealing with East Asia.

Please note that otherwise well-qualified applicants that do not meet some of the department prerequisites may, in some cases, still be admitted with the understanding that the student will fulfill these prerequisites later, outside of the 30 hours required for the M.A. degree.
