About

This inter-university Advanced English Studies and its Applications Master’s program at the University of Santiago de Compostela aims to provide a specialization in the language, literature and culture of English-speaking countries.

Overview

Skills and competences

Advanced English Studies and its Applications Master’s program at the University of Santiago de Compostela is adopting the most recent technologies and approaches, including corpus linguistics, textual and discursive studies, applied linguistics, language teaching and language acquisition, and computational linguistics; in addition, students are familiarized with new lines of research in the fields of syntax, lexicography, language change and communication.

Cultural and literary studies focus on recent theoretical perspectives on the textual and cultural interpretation of Anglophone society, such as feminism and post-colonialism, cultural identity and gender studies, cultural and literary modernism, as well as research into genre, literary modes and ideology in English literatures.

In both of these areas, lines of research are followed which ensure a multidisciplinary approach, essential to the cultural and linguistic exploration of issues in contemporary Anglophone societies

More specifically, the Master provides the necessary orientation for research and teaching at a university level in the various fields of specialisation of its teaching staff, namely:

  • language variation and change, principally from the perspective of Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar; corpus linguistics; sociolinguistics; psycholinguistics and language processing; pragmatics and discourse analysis; contrastive studies; English for Specific Purposes; language teaching and acquisition
