This research course develops through the conduct of a supervised research project the ability of a suitably qualified candidate to contribute to the knowledge and practice of engineering. At the completion of the assigned project, the candidate submits a written thesis presenting the results of the work and discussing their significance for the pertinent field of engineering. The thesis is examined according to the University's Regulations for the Degree of Master (by Research) (refer to the General Information section).
The topic for the research project is assigned to the candidate after consultation with the Head of Department. Students who are admitted subject to successful completion of a qualifying program will enrol in one or both of the Masters Qualifying Program units and undertake a specified program of study. On successful, completion students will qualify to proceed with the formal masters program. Failure to attain a satisfactory standard in the qualifying units will render a student ineligible for re-enrolment in the masters program. It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive a related Graduate Diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
