The English Education program provides initial teacher certification if you have an interest in teaching secondary English language arts (grades 6-12). The program’s underlying framework is constructivism, which suggests that human beings create knowledge through acting on their environment and interacting with other humans.

The program is a cohort program that encourages and supports planning, teaching and reflection with colleagues who are committed to excellence in urban English education.

The Department of Middle and Secondary Education prepares educators and other professionals in career and technical education, English education, English as a second language education, learning technologies, mathematics education, middle childhood education, reading education, science education, and social studies education.

Our mission is to engage in research, teaching, and service in urban environments with people from multiple cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. We work collaboratively with people in schools, communities, and organizations in metropolitan Atlanta and around the world. We are committed to innovation and creativity and to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and practice.

Accrediting agencies are private, nongovernmental organizations created for the specific purpose of reviewing higher education institutions and programs for quality. SACSCOC is the regional accreditor for colleges and universities. It is recognized by both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education. Its Commission on Colleges is responsible for the accreditation of universities, senior colleges, and two-year colleges. As of 2012, the Commission on Colleges of SACSCOC has updated their set of standards, known as the Principles of Accreditation that serve to guide an institution to demonstrate how well it fulfills its mission, the quality and effectiveness of its programs and services, and how it is engaged in an ongoing program of improvement.Accreditation is important for the university to be able to receive state and federal funds, including grants and loans for students to pursue their education. It also engenders confidence in the quality of the education offered at the institution. Proper accreditation is important for the acceptance and transfer of college credits, and receipt of a degree from an accredited undergraduate institution is a standard prerequisite for most graduate programs. Accreditation also encourages innovation and quality improvements.

Pell Grant offers assistance to high need students working toward their first bachelor’s degree. The Pell Grant is funded each year by Congress, which sets the minimum and maximum award amounts. If you are eligible for the Pell Grant, it will be listed on your Georgia State University financial aid award offer. Eligibility is determined by the FAFSA. There is no separate application, and the award will disburse automatically once you are registered. If you are enrolled less than full-time (12 credits) the amount disbursed will be less than the amount listed on your award offer.Beginning July 1, 2012, students are limited to 6 years of Pell eligibility, or the full time equivalent of six years for those attending less than full time. Since the maximum amount of Pell Grant funding you can receive each year is equal to 100%, the six-year equivalent is 600%. It’s possible that you might not receive your entire scheduled award for an award year. There are a number of reasons for this, the most common of which are that you are not enrolled for the full year or that you are not enrolled full-time, or both. If you did not receive the full amount of your scheduled award, we calculate the percentage of the scheduled award that you did receive.
