Overview
The Classics program
The UB Classics Department has implemented a new MA program in Ancient History. It provides an opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge of ancient history, sharpen their skill in ancient historical research, and improve their skills in one or more classical languages, even with no prior training in the languages.
Our master program in Classics offered by the University at Buffalo provides good background for subsequent admission to PhD programs in Classics and History, as well as supplemental and preparatory work for programs in secondary education. Our faculty has a collective mastery of Greek and Roman history from the emergence of Greece to Late Antiquity, as well as the technical expertise required for the modern study of ancient Mediterranean history in the 21st century. In addition, we have traditionally excelled in the study of Classical Archaeology and Ancient Material Culture, crucial specialties in the contemporary study of ancient history.
The program has the following concentrations:
MA: Ancient History Concentration
The MA in Classics: Ancient History deepens the student's knowledge of ancient history, sharpens their skills in ancient historical research, and improves their fluency in one or more classical languages, even with no prior training in the languages. Graduates of this focus will possess the necessary training and experience to pursue admission to a PhD in Classics or History, as well as supplemental and preparatory work for programs in secondary education.
MA: Latin Concentration
The MA in Classics: Latin concentrates on Latin language and Roman culture, and is ideal for students who wish to teach Latin at the secondary school level.
