BAs and MAs in Women Studies and Other Degrees with a Feminist Twist That You Can Study in the US

Women’s Studies are best for those inclined to activism and dedicating their lives to fighting for the causes they believe in or to question traditional values. Part of the feminist movement, Women’s Studies began as a reaction to the lack of inclusion of women in academia. Fifty years later, this subject area is often merged with Gender and Sexuality Studies, and many universities offer these types of degrees in the US

I know that if you’re reading this, it means you want to understand more about women and their role in society or to help women in difficult situations. Fortunately, during the past decade, the number of programmes addressing feminist issues in higher education continuously grew. Today, academia embraces Women's Studies and feminist approaches more than ever, but know that there are several paths to fulfilling your goal. You should think of the kind of work you want to do once you graduate and pick a degree that best prepares you for that: the one that serves your interests and career plans.

Women’s Studies draws upon several academic disciplines to explore a range of issues related to womanhood.  Several academic paths are available to those who want to study women and their historical and current conditions. You can major in Gender and Women Studies, earning a degree which offers many career options, from roles in health care and social work to teaching and counselling. You can also end up in government service or in law. You’ll have the chance to perfect your communication skills, critical thinking, and writing abilities, as well as develop ‘analytical and advocacy skills’.

But you can also specialise in a women-centred branch of a larger study area, whether during your Bachelors or later through a Masters or a PhD. Law, History, and Anthropology are some of the main disciplines which offer these specialisations. Look for degree or course titles that sound like this: Feminist Legal Studies, Women’s History, Feminist Anthropology.

Take the path of Law and dive into Feminist Legal Studies

If you’re interested in social justice, women’s rights, and helping to shape a fairer society, a Law degree might be just the right answer for you. The best way to ensure that all women have the same rights, that they are treated fairly at work, and that they can enjoy a safe life at home is to have good laws. The best way to defend them in difficult situations is to understand and know how to apply the law.  If you study Law, you can specialise in Feminist Legal Studies or Civil Rights and make a real difference.

Feminist Anthropology: for those with a passion for both anthropology and feminism

Anthropology studies past and present humanity, considering behaviour, culture, biology, society, and language. This academic path is particularly suitable for someone who has an interest in studying women from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Being a woman doesn’t look the same everywhere in the world, and there is much to learn and understand from observing women in other cultures, especially the less familiar ones.  Feminist anthropology uses feminist theory in its approach to classical anthropology.

Understand the role women played in History and discover their hidden stories.

Perhaps you love history, but you’re also a feminist, and the scarcity of women in history books frustrates you deeply. Then, what better choice is there than to study history and research precisely that which was forgotten: the role of women in historical events. Maybe this won’t be an easy path, but it sure will be satisfying.

For an all-encompassing approach, consider Women and Gender Studies

Historian Marilyn J. Boxer explains that "From the beginning, the goal of Women's Studies was not merely to study women's position in the world but to change it." If you want to be an activist for change, question the status quo through your work, and embrace new ways of viewing the world, then this is for you.

Through the interdisciplinary nature of this subject area, you will study a range of topics: civil rights, history, laws, and sexuality. This, in turn, means you can access several careers once you graduate, such as Human Rights Advocate, Counsellor, Community Worker, Public Policy Analyst, Politician, and others.
