How to Apply to an International University in Australia in 2018

Australia is one of those countries that created around itself an aura of mystery and thrill, with its beautiful opera, funny accents, deadly animals, and vast amounts of celebrity exports being the only definitive things people know about this country/continent.

Australia isn’t only a land of kangaroos, but also one of the most popular destinations for international students. Famous for its current welcoming policies and eclectic population, the universities and campuses overflow with diverse students and cultures.

Prepare to apply

We don’t wish to scare anyone, but CHECK.THE.VISA! The Visa requirements are very important for Australians, so you should go through the criteria and see if you qualify before you start applying.

Heads up, but the waiting periods can be very long, you could be required to make some extra trips and the documents could be hard to get, but thinking of the end prize, it puts everything into perspective.

Where to apply for an Australian Master’s?

Australia has websites dedicated to everything you need to know about studying there. Centralised and easy to research, each programme has an application section, where you can acquire all the lists you need for applying.

If your patience doesn’t stretch that long, there are websites that will help with your application, leaving you the sole task of writing and uploading documents. You should know, though, that they don’t come cheap. You should try and submit your application on your own and, only if necessary, seek them out for help.

Don’t forget that the universities are there for you, so if you encounter a bump on the round, don’t sweat it: just send an e-mail or call the application centres and they will be of service immediately.

Language requirements for an Australian university application

Australians want a language proficiency test for the applications. Fortunately, they have five options for the type of test they will accept. These are:

  • C1 Advanced
  • Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)

Not all countries need to submit this English certificate, so you should verify you’re not on the exempt list.

Required application documents

General application documents

Wherever you come from and whatever you will study, you will certainly have to submit your official academic transcripts and your certificate of award.

As for the most common forms required on Aussie applications, these are:

  • your personal details;
  • certified proof of your level of English language proficiency;
  • a summary of your employment experience (if applicable);
  • a non-refundable application fee.
Specific entry requirements

In some special case scenarios, another series of documents must be uploaded, such as:

  • Official proof that you changed your name, if you got married or if you adopted a new identity to fight crime;
  • Your final grades, if you applied before your final exams;
  • Official certified translations, if your documents are in another language than English. You have to go to authorised translators, seeing how simple notarial documents won’t cut it.

University application deadlines for Australia

Each Australian university has different deadlines, so it will all come down to you and your research capacity to find out the exact dates you should apply on. Still, we can prepare you with an introduction into the most important periods.

  • Late October - mid-November: application period for the first semester;
  • Mid-April - mid-May: application period for the second semester.

Everything comes down to the Visa: if your assessment level is high, you should apply as early as possible. The sooner you apply, the greater chance you will have to be accepted and even apply for an Australian scholarship.

Final steps after receiving your acceptance letter

Ok, so…

First things first, congratulations on your acceptance, now go:

  • Buy a plane ticket;
  • Organise your Student Health Cover;
  • Arrange your accommodation.

Fine, not everything will be this urgent and complicated. Your university will send an admissions package with information that will help you with your journey to Australia. This might include:

  • information about your course;
  • accommodation options;
  • facts about the location;
  • financial information;
  • details about orientation programmes.

It is one of the conditions of your student Visa, to be covered during your whole stay. The official health insurance of Australia doesn’t cover international students, but OSHC will take care of you. Here are also more details about the student visa application process for students going to Australia:

Usually, you can either choose your own OSHC, or you can go with the one your university will recommend, but, like always, research, research and research!
